Guys,

Sorry to reactivate this thread!

I had an emergency call out last Sunday to a loss of supply, not like me to do out of hours stuff, but I could not get away from this one, long story but nothing seedy! :_|

Main fuse gone, no seals, pulled fuse nearly burnt my fingers!

Looked at DNO head, pitch running down from inside.

Checked incomer, still live, fuse definitely US.

Rund DNO, WPD down here, gate them the story, they immediatley raised an emergency call.

In a reasonable time 2 DNO guys turn up.

Yep fuse is gone, head has started melting.

Will replace head, & fuse lead cable with 951 clamp.

I ask are you going to PME seeing them preparing the new Head with earth braid.

Hmm, no actually not, we'll leave it as TN-S.

They remove the braid.

I ask if it is still OK for them to fit 951's.

Answer, NO absolutely NOT.

Also, we are not allowed to remove them either, they have to stay put.

I say I guess your guys have had a few "bangs" then, "damn" right they answer so we have to leave them well alone now.

I also watched them change the Head live and observed the methods at close quarters and the PPE etc they use.

Enlightning it was.

Putting my "professional engineer" & "H&S professional" hats on I cannot officially comment whether I thought the work methods & PPE were OK or not on an open internet forum sorry apart from to say I would probably have done the same!

Not sure if you are saying they used a 951 clamp or not?

as we all do.

he said that the DNO guys dont touch them,

I would assume for fear of corrupting/moving an already suspect lead sheath to within striking distance of a live core.

batty,

On re-reading I can see the confusion.

They replaced head & fuse, would NOT touch the existing 951 clamp.

They are no longer allowed to fit or remove these items.

So if the DNO guys won't touch them live, I REALLY don't think we should either!

So IMHO find loose 951 on lead, DNO emergency call out to possibly compressed cable which may flash over, get them to do a live cut, remove the clamp fit a constant force spring and live re-joint.

IMHO.
