Todays talk is that in the event of a vote for Brexit, the government would not "allow" it and instead would sign upto the EEA like Switzerland and Norway. This requires similar payments, similar free movement rules but no say over new rules.

So not much change then?

We don't have much say now. Name me one piece of EU legislation that we stopped being enacted by the UK voting no to it?

If this happens do you think there would be rioting on the streets? A landslide for UKIP at the next election?

So this begs the very important question - Why do Norway and Switzerland remain as "outsiders" - what do they do this?

it has to be said several major car manufacturers are only here because of our weak labour laws and our EU membership, but if we have a trade deal...

I think there may be a lot of foriegn companies operating  the UK  for the reasons Binky gives ....and it worries me to think they may courgette off elswhere if we exit from the EU .       I believe the big Toyota plant is here for that reason ....there must be a lot more . 

The effect on an area when a huge employer disapears is catastropic . 

A large fasteners company near mewas talking a bout moving , I tended to think that won't happen ,... it'll cost a fortune .   

Founded in 1888  bought out by Stanley (Tools)    then Black & Decker .

Now  It's gone , to Germany, both large  sites gone , totally flattened , not a brick left after  all that time .

Easy in / easy out was one of Thatchers attempts to get big companies to locate here to sell into the EU. It kind of worked, but also backfired a few times as it was also easier to sack UK staff and keep plants in the rest of Europe open because of protective labour laws abroad. It also encourages more short term thinking, which in my opinion, is the biggest reason manufacturing has failed in the UK. The whole economy is driven more by sales teams who will buy from the cheapest source and sell to anyone daft enough to buy the products. Now if you look at engineering giants like Daewoo, they make just about anything you can think of, just like we used to do. This in turn gives them financial clout to invest in R&D and creates a future for the whole company, even if bits of it get shut down along the way. Whereas, the UK / USA model is to specialise with lots of small companies set up as stand alone companies. This basically means they tend to be small and prone to being bought out for the technology by companies the size of Daewoo, assett stripped, and shut down.

And then, on top of that lot, the house market is so rediculously strong, a company can shut down a large factory having sold its intellectual property, sell of the land for housing and make a quick killing. Firk the staff when ££££s can be made for little effort.

My office admin has just returned from France, having landed in whatever large town is close to the Loire valley, to be confronted by riot police everwhere and not a single bank or cashpoint working cos they had been trashed, (French anarchist types are very good at that) little public transport running, and all becuase the government is resisting a 35 hour week....

Most of my reasons for leaving the Eu is to cause trouble for the elite who have too much control and all the money......

You might get the referendum doesn't mean they'll give you the option to leave. They just want to be seen to be being fair to all, now if you believe that from a Tory well you're misguided. Should've put your vote to better use.

They knew it would be the ONLY way to get a majority. Hence Cameron's desicion to not seek a third term. The only thing is the renegotiation went pear shaped so now he has to back the remain camp just to save face. Anyone noticed that the supposed renegotiation has been convienently swept under the carpet?

As a child one of my neighbors was a research chemist at Harpur Hill Laboratory - Health & Safety Executive Research Centre, bonfire night has never been the same since. Along with his two sons we made all our own fireworks.

Strange how things happen, an old friend from a mining forum got in touch after I put that post up.
