guys,

can any one advise me wether i can use a normal air thermostat to control electric heated flooring?

cheers

I think that is a question you are best asking the manufacture of the heated floor.

As far as I'm aware, underfloor heating has two temperature sensors, one for the air and one for the floor itself.

After all you don't want the floor to get too hot, do we?

Floor stats combine a floor probe and a room stat so that they balance out the ambient temp and floor temp ... mainly so the floor doesnt overheat ... i'd reckon no to the normal stat ... wouldn't like a buried element overheating ..

thanks for that chaps, a further question though. If there is already a sensor in place under a tiled floor and just the thermostat needs replacing do you think i can use the old sensor?

yes, but check the rating of it - there often designed for a few amps. you may need a higher rated stat, or use the stat to power a relay
