Just scanning through Youtube  & came across an old  "This is Your Life"   programme  for   Sir Douglas Bader  , he and Leonard Cheshire  were schoolboy heroes of ours .

Leonard Cheshire VC   made a remark to the press that I always remember .       As he had made more bombing raids over Germany than anyone else they asked him how he conquered the fear ,  he must be very brave .

He said,  no I'm not brave  because I don't feel the fear ........the brave ones are the crews who, before a raid ,   cannot eat , are sick , losing control of their bowels , shaking with  fear .....then climb aboard the Lancasters and complete yet another mission ,     they are the heroes .

...and it's even more frightening when you look at the age of the crews!

the biggest issue that a lot of today's equivalent generation have is

Broaband speed

social media and not being liked or "unfollowed"

McDonalds being closed

broken selfie stick

failed lip implants

It really makes my urine boil
My feelings exactly  ,  Spitfire pilots aged 19  defending the country against the Luftwaffe   instead of in their bedrooms  watching  Big Brother Essex on Love Island  get me outta Here I'm missing my cell phone .

Yes I know its a different world now  but I do wonder  if some of them have any idea ..............I saw the  youngster of a family on Gogglebox  ,  they were watching an episode of Dad's Army ....he obviously had no clue as he said ..." Why are they SO old " ??

He was made to shut up for the classic line  :-

German POW        " You too vill go in zee book ,  Vot iz your name "??

Captain Mainwaring .." Don't tell him Pike  !"

Reminds me of taking a tea break on a job , discussion on TV comedy ,    some idiot  came out with ------  "  Can't stand that Captain Mainwaring ,  he,s such a pompous ass  "

I'm thinking  --no you daft part ...he,s a good actor ,  how can you not see that .

There was a touching bit in one episode , or the film ,  with Mainwaring & Sergeant Wilson sitting behind sand bags all night watching the channel after an invasion warning .

Mainwaring  to Wilson ;        "  This is our country Wilson , this is England  they think they're invading , well they're not damn well having it , they'll have to get past me first "

Wilson :  " Yes Sir , I think I know what you mean "

Mainwaring is armed with a  First World War rifle & 10 rounds    but I know what he means too.

My mums cousin died on his 46th mission over Germany in February 1945. He was the navigator on a Lancaster , in 635 squadron - one of the elite squadrons of pathfinders who dropped coloured flares on the targets to help the main bombing crews.

he was just 21 when he died ..... his young sister never recovered from the shock of losing her brother. She died in 2017 .... and would never talk about him.

my son is 21 next year and I can’t imagine his generation fighting for anything except the latest pc game
