Today I had a call off a regular customer... he wants me to wire a 3ph supply for a display chiller... its being installed on Thursday

As it is I do have some time on Wednesday,,,, ive not booked anything in for that day yet but I was hoping to do some jobs that I've had waiting on my books for an age.

The problem is that the company say that the condenser needs a 32A 3ph supply,,, now theres no way that a condenser needs a supply like that, the suppliers recon that the condenser is 3hp so surely that should run very happily on a C16 or even a C10....

Or am I wrong?

As Sidewinder says above, I get asked this all the time and when you see the plate it says totally different.

The thing I installed 2 supplies right across the other side of the building about 8 years ago for an air con unit and a chiller unit,, both of them 32A 3ph,,, IIRC I put in 16mm 4c SWA for them

I think they go on the fact that on the last one the 'spark' had to fit a B45 to stop it tripping on start,

they've never heard of Cs or Ds  :|

I've had the same for years with Air Con blokes specifying  30A TP supplies to the condensor units mounted outside .  WHen they appear they are in the region of a 1/4 HP motor ...

The petition is now closed, but I was just using it as an example of why using the word engineer is not appropriate for describing some trades.

Engineer is in fact derived from two Latin words, both fail to come to mind just now apart from the English, devise and cleverness which I think is Ingenium.

An engineer uses science and mathematics to find solutions to problems.

If we take a simple table for example, you could make one from scratch no problem, but the engineer will tell you how stable it is, how long it will last, how much weight it can hold and prove by equations all his or her findings.

Now most people who call themselves engineers would not know anything about si or Youngs modulas, they would probably still write large numbers by using all the 0's instead of scientific notation.

Oh and engineers get really excited when they solve a problem, so much so that it is recorded so others can follow. On my degree if I do not do some certain modules, even if I get my degree in engineering I will not earn the right to call myself an engineer.
