Hi this is first post of mine so be nice!!!lol:|

Currently doing abit of folk lift driving in a warehouse whilst studying for my 2330 technical certificate, when ever i go to use the folks they have tripped the MCB.. I have noticed that the folks are giving out about 50amps to charge the batterys and are running on a 40amp type B mcb.

I am guessing that its the wrong MCB because i swear that this type of equipment should run on type C MCB, and type C 40amp would give more tolerance before tripping.

please help!!!

and if anyone from near milton keynes knows of any apprentiships would you kindly let me know as i have had my ear to the ground for so lond i swear im getting frost bite:D

Hello Mr Brightspark, good morning and welcome to the forum. I am sure you will find the guys, and girls are nice, once they wake up and log on, or get back from work.

Doc H.

The trip is way to low! It should be 130% of the faceplate input ampage to allow for the current limiting point of the charger.

To expand on the above.

When a battery is empty it has a very high current capacity. So when you charge it the charger will have a current limiter built into it to prevent the battery just swallowing current and so tripping out the charger. Modern chargers limit this to 1-2% over the rated input but convention is that the ac fuse/mcb is provided at 120-130% of the input.

Now is the mcb tripping as soon as the forks are plugged into charge or it's tripped first thing in the morning when you use it?

It seems that the 40A rcd is staying on long enough while overloaded that is seems fine on the initial charge but it will trip out if 50A are following through it after an hour or two.

folk lift driving?is that a new kind of ring & ride service??
Nah, stuff gets moved around on a truck covered in bells and waving white hankies. After each load is deposited the truck shimmies backwards banging sticks together.

The original trucks were built at Cowley, Oxford in a former bicycle factory. :p
