I am trying to change a boring white light switch to a chrome light switch in our hall way upstairs, it is a 2 way light switch so turns on the light on the 2nd floor and also the upstairs 3rd floor - I've changed the other light switches in the house but this one has baffled me, There is 1 brown wire a grey and a black for i assume the left switch but for the right switch there is 1 black 1 grey & 4 brown wires? The grey cable also has a brown cover and on the 1st switch the black wire has a brown cover? For the life of me I can't figure it out I wire the light switch the way I know and the light comes on but doesn't turn off an on? I shall attach photos to hopefully make it a bit easier to understand, any help is appreciated no matter how simple a mistake I may be doing! Hope the links work :)

^^ those links don't work

Have you taken the old one off and if you have, did you take a photo before you did this?

Hi,

If I copy and paste the links they work for me? Apologies if they don't,

I did take a photo yes installed it exactly the same it hasn't worked - it's really difficult to explain without being able to show photos.

Thanks

Hum - its not clear enough really to give you much guidance .............

what ever you do next, you need a CPC from the back box to the switch

Here is your original switch

I do hope you have not got the browns muddled up if so it is going to be a hell of a job to unravel.

The thing that is probably confusing you is your new switch has one switch connections one way up and the other the other way up. the old switch has them both the same way up.

And the labelling is different so:

Old switch   New switch

1                        L1

2                        L2

L                       Com

So whatever was in "1" on the old switch goes to L1 on the new etc.

It is as simple as that.

Remember there are many different ways to connect 2 way lighting. You do not need to understand how it is connected, just connect the new switch as the old one was connected, accounting for the differences in labelling and orientation of the switches.

And don't forget to connect the earths to the earth terminal on the new switch

Thank you so much!

I wondered why there was no COM on the old switch but you explained it perfectly,

Luckily I managed to keep all the brown wires organised in my own kind of way - 6 hours I've battled today to get this sorted, and your answer solved it instantly.

Thank you :)
