when to add a socket below a worktop for a washing machein. kitchen fitter rang and asked me to do it said there is a socket above i could take it off.

got there old metal fuse box, no rcd,

2 sockets side by side took the first one off 1 cable coming down 1 to the socket next to it, so took the next one off and no other cable.

the cu is one where you have to take the front cover off just to see the fuses, whole house on 30 amp ring.

i explained about the spur off a spur and no rcd so cant bury the cable, i said the best i could do is rcd spur feeding 2 socket. was not too sure about that as its for the washing machine and kettle.

they had a mone and said just move the one of the spurs and that it would be no different to what it was now, usual questions,

did not touch any of it,

do you think i am a bit overcautious?

Tom , your post raises some interesting points . As Andy says , the kitchen fitter will probably do it and probably charge more than you would.

One point worth discussiion contained within your post was the fact that you were brought in as a professional to install a socket and then the client promptly starts telling you how they want it done. ( My mate would have told them to do it themselves TBH)

They probably paid a fortune for the kitchen but try to screw the Sparks down over a socket .

Another point is that if the job had presented itself a year ago , the RCD question wouldn't have been raised.

I'm unsure about you being over cautious, I think all of us Sparks can be guilty of that at times , but if you think someone is browbeating you into doing something you are not happy with doing, then yes, its time to walk.

+1.

You have to sleep at night.

Moving a socket is not something that can be done under the "like for like wherever you like" slogan so it should be notified too.

my take on this is if they spend a lot of money on a complete kitchen refurb then they would have enough money to get the elctrics correctly installed, no if buts or maybes, if i was looking at that job id have checked water bonding, main tails, and also main earth and gas bonding aswell! thats just me, then id have said if any of these needed making up to current regs then that work would have to be carried out if they wanted me to install extra sockets in a kitchen!

I made my aunt have an upgraded cu to fit her an extra socket in her lounge.

bonding was 10 mm, his cooker and shower were on same circuit, so another spark put an add on consumer unit prob upgraded then, no rcd though, but dont how long back that was

I went to quote a job one night to move a socket.

It was on the wall between the lounge and the cloakroom and the freezer was in the cloakroom and the socket on the lounge side, cable through the wall to the socket and the reason for moving it was that their grand-daughter kept switching it off.

30 year old board, no visible bonding, inadequate earth, etc, etc.

Told the owner to put something in front of the socket to stop the kids switching it off and save himself the money.
