Now that reminds me of what my old headmaster used to say at school.....(when trying to get us all to behave and be polite on the way to & from school, while in our school uniforms..)

"It takes years to build up a reputation and 5 minutes to knock it down!"

Cheap job... Little or no back up or support...

(assisting customer with any 12 month warranty issues.. you as supply could be involved with?)

The answer is all quite simple, basic rules on economics and business...

You either

Tell customer.. Sorry the cheep price did NOT include any after sales back up or support. !

40 quid sounds ok for an hours work. I would charge about that but have to add double that again to allow for materials, fuel, time spent invoicing, certification, van, tools, tax etc so i wouldnt earn much more what you have charged. You just have to remember the customer is getting what he has paid for, (im making assumptions here so dont get offended) no comeback if it goes wrong, no cert, no nothing really apart from from a smelly heater! I would be a black pot if i said i havent done stuff like this in the past so i wont judge you, but since becoming self employed, i would be royally knarcked off if i found one of my employees doing jobs at my expense. Go back and get it sorted and you never know, you might get more jobs off the back of it.

Should of said am not taking work off my employer, as they don't do general domestic work

As the saying goes i can work for nothing,or stop in bed for nothing, stop in bed allways WINS in my mind.

1970s watch out for asbestos in the insulation, ppf3 mask, tyvek 5 suit and remove as a whole and double bag. and charge them for it
erm... nothing to remove...

Its old underfloor heating circuit failed!

Supply of which will now be diverted and converted to a new storage heater. ;)

hence only

I wasnt to bothered about going back to fit the new bricks, it was more the guy phoning me & being an ass & saying I had messed him about! Although I didn't I done the the job inside of two days of being asked to do it, & i saved him

I think most time served guys have done a cash job at some time,

its a matter of pricing that has you cornered,

do a proper job, in your time, with your costs(fuel, materials, tools etc) and simply knock 30-40%(maybe even 50% if you really like the girl!) off what your boss would charge,

customer gets it for nearly half price, same guy actually does the work,

but make it crystal clear, the job is guaranteed until I get to the pub with your cash.

and although you are undercutting proper trades, at least the customer knows he is getting a proper spark, but NOT the comeback or guarantee of a firm.

anyone here that can tell me they have never done a foreigner please own up as to whether you are time served or not. :)

Done lots of foreigners. Usually for workmates or family. Never really gone looking for them. Sometimes don't charge enough and end up kicking myself sometimes get a nice surprise. Nowadays I don't bother at all. Don't have time.

Yes I have, her name was Lola, I think she worked in a show, at least she did when they had one. A long time ago now. ;)

P.S. The only time I served was with her.
