Be carefull with leaving a memory stick or ext hard drive connected all the time I used to do that, until I had a virus break through and it infected the lot. I know connect my external hard drive (WD Passport from Amazon) and run the back up programme provided with the hard drive, once a week. Works a treat.

Cheers Steve

Received the External Hard-Drive Today.

Plugged it in and this is what I see:

No Installtion Instructions, No Disc. On Amazon it is down as a "Plug & Play" (Therefore I will not need a disc).

But on the Manufacturers website, it has a completely different version of the model that I have, and it says to insert the Installation CD-Rom. :_|

How the Heck do I add files to it?

:_|

The link is the one that Lurch posted.

Are you really this computer illiterate?!

It is plug and play, you've plugged it in and it works.

Select the 'open folder to view files'. Drag and drop stuff into it.

I know it is and a reason for me buying it. I was stating that for my model on the Manufacturer's website - it stated that I have to install the Instruction CD-Rom. WTH?!

Tried that before replying here, but it didn't work?

Dunno, don;t do instructions!

What happens when you open the external drive, either through the pop up screen and\or via my computer?

Can you view it and not drop files in it or not view it at all? Can you copy anything into it?

What version of Windows are you on?

Finally, Managed to do "My Pictures" but am unable to do it to "My Documents" I get the error message in my attachment below. (Drag & Drop).

Odd. I've just had a couple of XP laptops in for reinstallation so first thing I did was backup My Docs. I just plugged the external drive in and dragged them across.

There is a possibility that XP is locking the My Docs folder itself, you may find you can just copy every subfolder of My Docs rather than the My Docs folder itself. This would explain why you can copy the My Pics folder quite happily.

To do this just create a My Docs folder on the external hard drive then copy the entire contents of the My Docs on the PC into it. (Open My Docs, Ctrl+A, drag and drop or copy and paste).

Tried that, didn't work that way either.

So I tried individually, which Worked.

Then I hightlighted several, and that worked, on the second batch, I received an Alert - So I assume that may have something to do with it - or that there is a Maximum size of files that can be moved in a transfer.

Is this the same External HD that you have Lurch?

Are you trying to do the whole my documents folder or indivual files/folders from within my documents ?

Ha ha, Found the problem File - I believe. It contained files where the names were too long.

I even had to shorten them - Before I could delete them. :(

Ah, that could be it. Good old useful error messages. ;)

No, I don;t have that drive ATM, I have recommended it a couple of times and no-one else has had any bother. Got one on order though for backing up my Dads PC soon.

As for the unable t copy everythign at once problems, that's a Windows thing, rather than doing everything it can and then just leaving the problematic files it halts the job at that point and cancels the remaining job queue. This is why I sometimes copy individual folders so the confusion is minimised if soemthing goes a bit wrong.
