insured small van for the lad last year £2k as he was not quite 21 and had no NCB. This year got a fleet policy based on office address which being on edge of town meant we could get a 'rural policy' so got both vans plus 3 named drivers for both vehicles for slightly less than both vans independently. In short insurance companies hate young van drivers, but I would try an independent insurance broker - their expertise is the only way of finding these deals. My neighbour , who is very well off , wife is a model / TV extra, they only live here for convenience TBH, ( like as I get in the car to fetch fish and chips on a Friday night ...they are going out to dinner ...only its Gordon Ramsay's in London ...about 120 miles away !!
Anyway he went for some sort of loan to buy this expensive car ( some sort of Audi sports thing ) on top of his two Beamers but was refused .
Although his income is very high , owns a thriving company, around 15 houses rented out ,part shares in a phone company , 2nd home in Cyprus etc.

Would an estate car be any cheaper?
Insurance is strange TBH , they factor in a load of stuff to arrive at a figure.
A few years ago I was paying more for a slow, lumbering, diesel Ford Escort van, 1 driver, than , in comparison, our private car, a fairly fast Escort ,petrol, twin cam, 1600 ,2 drivers. Same company .
When I questioned them they said the risks are always greater for the van, as commercial, than the car , you drive onto buiding sites etc . " No I don't they don't let you"
The van had little vaue compared to car but no, greater risk !!!1

Insurance is a strange thing, but at the end of the day it is all based on statistics, the under 21's make more claims so they should pay more, men make more claims than women, they should pay more (although Europe has now declared that to be discrimination so not allowed anymore).
My sister recently but both my 20 year old nephew and myself on the insurance for her company van, to put him on increased the insurance by £1,000, putting me on increased it by £12.
He didn't understand that my 37 years no claims discount played a large part.
Then I had the misfortune to be a passenger while he drove, he seems to think that if the sped limit is 60mph then it's compulsory to do 60mph irrespective of the conditions and traffic

That is the problem with a lot of drivers. I drive a fair bit in the country and you get the yuppie types driving round bends at 60 mph as that's the speed limit. But there could quite easily be farm machinery or horses Etc. around the corner. I never drive over 40 mph in the country unless its a straight bit. You should drive for the road conditions.

Im always very careful on the country roads around Cheshire where i often drive, Its just other road users that arnt so carful driving right up yer arse until they can pull out even on a solid white.
I used to get cheaper insurance when i lived in the CW postcode than where i am now in the WA8 area
