Just coming home today I pulled upnto a junction around the corner from home and as I'm pulling out the engine stalls and will not re-start:( :(

It's a Kangoo 1.9 (non turbo) and I'm not even getting the glow plug warning light, I have recently serviced it including all filters, oil and glow plugs and it has been starting much better (I had 2 faulty glow plugs) ; although from time to time once started the glow plug light would come back on and the revs would pulsate and there would be no power in the engine, turning the engine off and then starting it would get rid of this problem.

I have checked all the fuses (that I could find) and un plugged and refitted all the relays (just in case of poor connections)

Unfortunately the earliest I can get a mechanic out is tomorrow at about 1pm:(

Any ideas???

Doesn't even turn over, not a click from the solenoid and the battery is good;)

I don't even get the glow plug light on the dash!

I forgot to say in my OP that a relay in a compartment near the battery chatters when the ignition is on.

The only other problem I have had recently is the pulsating revs.

I got Mrs Noz to tow me home and it wouldn't even start off a tow (bump start),,, always has before

I've checked the cambelt and it looks OK

Its anyone's guess until the mechanic arrives but I hope its not an engine management circuit board.

Oh ! Did you say filters ? That was the problem with Thunderbird 2 . I had replaced the diesel fuel filter and the recepticle it sits in wasn't sealed properly and was (every few days) drawing air into the injection system, engine cutting out or not starting , Ford Escort 55D .

Edit:-

Just read your 2nd post , its not going to be what I said about air entering system. Sounds like electronics .

Try the ignition relay, or the starter relay.

Pin 30 battery live (supply), pins 85/86 are the coil of the relay 87 is the NO 87a is the nc output contacts wrt to 30.

Do you get dashboard lights?

No charge, oil pressure etc.?

In of the fuse boxes, it will be labelled under the fuse box lid, just test it like a 230V contactor because that's all it is just with a 12V d.c. coil.

You can power the coil from the battery, use a fuse in line though!

Compare coil resistances with adjacent units.

Not definite but ish.

i had a contactor this week where the coil R was the same as its neighbour, but it would not pull in the armature.

Noz, I noticed when working at a car body repair shop that there were unused relay bases on some of the cars, so very easy to plug it back in the wrong hole , so mark where it came from .

Let us know what the problem is

Sorry to hear of your van problems Noz. I thought this was Evans thread at first when I saw the title, assuming that his Thunderbird2 had packed in again. Hope it doesn't mess up your work diary too much. Nothing worse than having to ring customers to reschedule jobs, I think it just gives the wrong impression unless they are regular customers who already know you. I think engines nowadays are just to complicated for their own good.

Engines are too complicated now!

My vivaro stoped on the brow of a hill on a narrow lane the other night, very dangerous. A nut on an injector came loose and spewed a bit of fuel out, tightened up no problem. But if it had been an older engine I could have ran on 3 cylinders to safety, instead of the electicals taking over stopping the van in a dangerous spot.

Well, the mechanic turned up this afternoon,,,

He recon'd that there was corrosion in the engine compartment relay block terminals, I'd already tested all the relays that I could and they seemed to be OK, so a squirt of WD40 later and,,,,,no difference

Any way Mrs Noz has been researching the fault on the internet and she found somewhere saying that it could be the glow plug controller,,,, like this one

RENAULT KANGOO LAGUNA CLIO TRAFFIC GLOW PLUG RELAY | eBay

I disconnected the plugs and low and behold all the dash lights came on (and off) as usual; however while the solenoid operated, the starter wouldn't turn, so I decided that we should try a tow start,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the engine started!!!

Great chance to get it on my ramps and check out the starter motor,,,, very very very difficult to access and I couldn't get it to spin up so I decided to replace it... Not an easy job I can tell you:(

Well,,,, the blinking thing still wouldn't start,, exactly the same symptoms as before:( :( :( :(

At least that doesn't sound so bad , now a matter of identifying the exact problem . Stuff like this , a mechanic may probably go straight to it.

Oh just a thought , WD40 is'nt the best stuff for contact cleaning , the proper RS stuff is the biz (Can't remember the name ) ( Bet Slidegrinder knows)
