For some reason I always thought they used timing belts to make the engine that bit quieter .

These things must be catching ...my carpenter mate who drives the same van as me , just had his timing belt break , engine fubared , got to pick him up tomorrow .

Best check the milage on my own now!!

The transit I now have has a chain the previous was belt. I had the belt go two times. First time was a year after the previous belt had been replaced. luckily only a few bent rods. Second time it went one morning on starting so again limited damage. I think you find with transits the engines are pretty bulletproof and generally are not a write off if cam belt goes.

Sorry, been offline for a few days but just to let you all know that it was the oil pump that was faulty.

An earlier post got it exactly right.

Still my fault.

The oil pressure light came on so I stopped the van to check oil level which was ok. So continued to drive with the light coming on and off.

3 miles down the road realised I had made a fatal mistake.

Total cost £1260 which included new rear spring and exhaust tail piece.

Thats what happened to my nephew recently, on his peugeot van. He said oil light came on, loss of power and then because he still carried on driving to get home i think he caused more damage to the engine!
