My van wouldn't start this morning:( :( even when using a booster battery...

It just wouldn't turn over (very sluggish turning over and won't fire)

It was a new battery in Jan 2007 and I always get better than needed (got 4 year warranty)

so off to the shop where I bought it and he sticks his little digital tester on it and it comes up as OK,,, but it won't even turn my engine over!!

So I come home and connect it to my car via jump leads and disconnect car battery -ve .... won't turn my car engine over either!! (and I went to the car shop in that, so not even a cold engine!!)

so back to the shop and he tests it again!! and still it shows OK:O:O and he won't give me a warranty exchange (hasn't got one in stock anyway).. eventually I got him to order one in for the morning and if mine fails then he will exchange it.. surprise surprise it's now flat!!

OR is there something else it could be??

is it definatley flat or just wont turn over? It may be your starter motor. What van is it?

Surely he needs to test it with a discharge tester , a digital thing will just show 12 volts, discharge test will show a duff cell. Must be duff if wouldn't start your car. IMO

Deke

it could be your starter, I had a kangoo some time ago with a failed starter. Does sound something more than just a battery if it won't start off the car aswell, unless its a small engined car with a small battery. If it is the starter, good luck with changing it, you need pipe cleaner arms and fingers!!

could be a ******** starter motor aswell though.

i had one that failed, and engine wouldnt even turn over and battery was ok. (we even tried a tractor battery) but that failed to turn it aswell.

If it's a decent one there's sparking and arcing and smoking.

If it's just a digital meter it'll show nothing. Easy to test in situ in the van, assuming you can start it. If not, then as you have half done see if the battery will start something else and see what else starts the van. Confirms where the fault is then.

Just had this with my car, battery was tested with a discharge tester and yiou could see the voltage dropping quickly so no question. I must admit it is sounding more like a starter motor.

Got to be a duff battery.

If its been tested on an other car and that won't turn either, then I very much doubt the starters or ****ged on both vehicles.

I used to have a Astra van, went to the shops got back in and it wouldn't start. I called the RAC he told me the starter had gone. To get me going he told me to turn it over while he tapped the starter motor with the handle end of a screwdriver, it worked. Only a temporary fix I still had to get a new starter motor but it got me moving.

Yeah ive heard of that too but i heard "give the starter a few taps with a hammer" to free it up. May be worth a try i not the battery.

That is a "Sticky Starter Motor". Not a knackered Motor.

;)

I have done that many times, on several of my ex-cars, over the years. :)

Brother-in-law is a mechanic. "Quadzilla" from this very forum. If you need help or advice. (I am sure he wouldn't mind me saying that). :)

had an identical problem with one of our vans a few years back - faulty starter motor - had burnt out. does the van start if you bump start it? if it does, but still wont turn on starter motor, you need a new one (motor, not van!)

He says the battery won't turn his car over either.

Wouldn't this point to the battery, as the chances of 2 starters being faulty are pretty much:O

Then why wouldn't the van's battery start the other vehicle?
Im not here for arguement just trying to help but will keep quiet in future. :( Maybe where he's tried starting the van so much its flattened the battery and will not start the other car either. I dunno
