I'm 110% certain you know this BUT for the benefit of others VAT relates to turn over in ANY 12 consecutive months HMRC decide

Yes you're right Murdo, I never got near the threshold TBH but registered voluntarily years ago when two major customers had some major works coming up , wanted us to do them but as commercial printers they wouldn't be able to reclaim VAT .

I'm semi retired now & its just a PITA.
