Vehicle Inspection Pits - Regulations

Does anyone know of any specific requirements and/ or regulations concerning electrics in vehicle inspection pits? I have a customer who is currently constructing a pit (not commercial), which I will be asked to wire in due course.

thats one of the reasons I dont do anything remotely resembling Ex work anymore, been a long time and I dont know the regs anymore, and my certs have long since lapsed......

Had not read the old thread before, most interesting. I was considering building a pit myself at home and still may but THAT's another story!

Talking to my MOT guy the other day and he was saying that aside from all the problems mentioned in the other thread one more is working on vehicle AC units. Seems that one of the gases used is heavier than air - should it leak it stays in the base of the pit. It can apparently cause skin burns to the lower legs etc for anyone working in the pit!

I had loads of issues with inspection pits at my previous employer mainly that the installation in the pit was both usuitable for the the enviroment and in my view unsafe.

They had Ip66 fittings screwed to the sides of the pit with light guage PVC tube between them with singles inside.

My veiw was that it was a hazardous area and should have the vapour proof fittings with either steel tube or MI cable.

The fiiters used the lights as a step into the pit and they where often hanging off the walls !
