A question to those of you more initiated than I am in this, is there a cable that has a VGA termination on one on end, and an HDMI termination on the other end? Its apparently to connect a tv to a built in Blu-Ray player in a brand new PC? I am only asking this on behalf of a friend as to be honest, I dont have a clue about this side of things.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated :worship

Could do DVI to HDMI but you won't get the sound then. TBH get a stand alone player as a PC wuring in the corner is very offputting.

You have also to consider HDCP (HD Content Protection), if try to play a BluRay (film) you will not get a picture as you can't pass the HDCP via VGA

Your best and cheapest option is to buy a low cost graphics card with HDMI out for under

Again cables won't help if HDCP handshaking comes into play and the TV and PC can't complete HDCP checks

I'd imaging that the VGA to HDMI will unlikely display the desktop for the reasons stated, if it does indeed convert analogue to digital it will likely fail on HDCP as part of the content protection scheme on BluRay is to prevent it being piped down an analogue signal path to stop copying onto an analogue medium

There's a chance that DVI-HDMI may work as DVI and HDMI are fundamentally the same, but as far as I recall without an HDMI chip on the PC (e.g. graphics card) it can't initiate HDCP handshaking ergo PC desktop ok, but blank picture when you try to play a BluRay movie

Yes they do, they also do adapters that allow you to plug a VGA cable into a DVI port.http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=97372
But it is still analogue e.g. DVI-A does not convert to DVI-D as stated on the web page further down

I have an HDMI screen, that also has a VGA port.

My desktop at the time didn't have a HDMI port, although it did have a DVI one. I used a VGA to DVI adapter on a VGA cable, no probs. I believe the adapter came with the screen?

I connect my laptop to the screen via a HDMI cable, for watching media as it's quieter that the desktop. No probs switching between inputs.

I can't see this working without some form of A-D converter, there's no room in either connectors as shown in the picture for anything else bar the cable ends, I suspect that this is intended for use with an A-D box of some sort

Most decent screens with DVI will detect either analogue VGA and switch to DVI-A, or a full digital signal and switch to DVI-D, in your case I presume you saying that the laptop has DVI-A/D out and the monitor has VGA

I presume your laptop does not have a BluRay player, it's possible that HDCP is not supported if there is no BluRay drive swap option for it

My monitor can switch between digital and analogue.

It has a VGA input port and a HDMI one. I had the DVI-I dual link output port on my graphics card connected to the VGA input on the monitor by use of a simple (DVI-I dual link to VGA) adapter and VGA cable. The adapter came with the monitor, and there are no boxes of tricks installed or required.

My laptop has an obsolete HD/DVD optical drive and a HDMI output port which I connected to my monitor by the use of a HDMI cable.

I use the laptop to watch films (some HD) and TV as it is quieter than the desktop, I use the desktop for other more mundane things.

I can switch between inputs, or if I switch something off it automatically switches to the live feed.

It's likely then that your Laptop supports HDCP, but as you say the HD-DVD is obsolete, and would make little sense adding a portable BluRay as you might as well just by a standard player and connect that to your TV
