I'm just perusing auto-trader (as you do whilst laid in jacuzzi at 17.18 after a day of 2nd fixing rebuild [35 d/ls done 38 to go!]) and was rather fancying something nice ....... a 2nd hand bmw650/645 convertible for the summer days ahead, which I have promised myself to not work all of and was wondering what everybody's driving at the moment.

My last 3 cars I've acquired through work or relations, 3rd was a newly imported Pajero ( shogun) imported for 4.5k from a guy who went bust owing me 2500 I paid 1000 ran it for a year and sold it for 3000 just as the road tax leapt to £400peryear.

Then I bought a relations Mazda rx8 for 1500 which is all he had been offered part exchange, ran that for 2 yrs and sold it for 1500 so lost nothing except huge gallons of oil a clutch and 2 calipers. Presently I'm driving a 207 diesel which is phenomenally economical at 60+mpg from a plasterer who was banned drink driving over the summer. ( please no plastered plasterer jokes)

Soo time for a change and something nice, something with a carbon footprint that can be seen from space!.................

whats everyone driving and why?

Everyday car / work "van" Subaru Forrester. Good cheap practical 4WD car that doesn't cost the earth and tows anything I want.

For "fun" (I admit not everyone's idea of fun) a 1972 Landrover. £0 road tax and £100 classic car insurance

Volvo s60,full leather interior heated seats etc very comfortable, very quick (there's a reason why the motorway police like em), fairly economical if driven correctly. Nothing ever seems to fail on them!!

If you want a fun car, how about an MGF?>

The last, and least popular MG's (some will say not a proper MG)

But you can get a very tidy example for under £2k, quite economical, and you never know might achieve collectors status and appreciate one day.

A friend at the sailing club has one and it looks like a lot of fun car for the money.

porsche boxster. z4, s2000 can all be picked up for around 7k for a good one, average miles.

Running costs are the biggest cost though, maybe not so on the s2000

Mx5s are good fun on a budget. S2000 next on the list if you're spending a bit more. Or with practicality, performance and the ability to pass petrol stations, BMW 535D

Ford focus st always wanted one just can't warrant one

Gotta be about out 07 plate don't like what they've done with the newer model

Renault trafic for the necessary stuff, Gixer 1000 for the  fast and balls out stuff and KTM450 supermoto for the fun stuff. Pretty much got kit all covered I reckon, dont really want anything else except maybe a dedicated track bike and the time to ride it

The trouble with a prat mobil Capri as an every day car, is it would rust out and die as quick as they did when new.  Cars like that only survive now as classic cars by being cosseted, and never taken out on a rainy day, and under no circumstances in the winter with salt on the road.

That's what I like about my Landrover with it's galvanised chassis. It will prbably outlive me, regardless.

I like Fords and have a MK11 Cortina as Dave says not an everyday car though.
I had one of those once. Much better than the later MK III which I also had some time later and hated it.

If only I had just kept one of the cars I had as a lad, and just stored it in a dry garage, it would be worth a fortune now. My first car for instance, a MK1 Ford Escort.

P.S we always said back then that FORD stood for Fix Or Repair Daily :coat

Cheeky git! :slap  I'll have you know that Harry Styles, he of One Direction "fame" has just joined my Capri forum!....................Actually we're still all reeling a bit, wondering if it's a good thing or not. Us old'uns are just hoping he'll post pictures of his conquests i.e. Taylor Swift, Caroline Flack et al. All had a good laugh when he introduced himself saying he had a MK2 - everyone jumped in to tell him it was a MK1 (albeit a fairly rare example).

Not sure if he'll win any fans with these gems of comments:

"don't think I will bother any of the technical section chaps as I will have somebody look at it for me"

and the kicker:

"Cheers Chaps, I will have my P.A. upload some pics as soon as she can sort it, I am a bit useless myself at this type of thing, but she is very good, looks after me when I am in London, on tour I have some of the Roadies that look after everything, I am sure one of them can handle it. Table booked at "The Ivy" then off to Stringfellows for a V.I.P. session! Harry."

NOT that I am in any way jealous................... :innocent

Some SERIOUS money in / being spent on old Fords now - pretty sure this rebuild is over £30K

I always found my Cortinas I had to be reliable they just rusted badly but in those days most manufacturers were the same vauxhalls especially.

One Direction made a video with a Series 1 Landrover, so they do have taste. (That Landrover has just been for sale on ebay with a starting price of £30K, it didn't sell)

And I too admit "going through the phase" and owning a Capri for a couple of years. But I found it so impractical, that I sold it and bought my first Landrover.

Got to admit I do fancy a Landrover for the snow down here!

Still got my first Capri I had when I was 18 and I'm 46 now! A few peeps have grafted XR4x4 mechanicals under the Capri skin to create a 4WD hybrid a bit like they did with the Massey Ferguson / Ford project for the rally Capris back in the 70's. Del Boy's was up for auction recently - I didn't follow it. Bodie's silver 3.0S went for £20K something a couple of years ago. There's a lad in Eire who's made it his mission to collect as many of The Professionals Capris as he can.
