What certificates are worth getting put through by my company that will benefit me? If anyone could let me know what they think are the best ones to be put through that would be great.  :D

Look round at what job vacancies want usually PASMA and IPAF are a must.

A swimming badge deffo if wanting to work offshore...............

Seriously though, depends on what you have at the moment. How old are you? If they will pay then take whatever you can get and see it through as it's a damn sight harder when you have kids, mortgage and you're paying for it yourself.

If you have nothing at the moment then will they give you block release to do say an Electrical Installation Level 2 diploma?

Give us more info ref what you do / what current quals you have.

im 23, just finished an electrical apprenticeship, im still working for the company, i have an HNC in Electrical practice, just passed my 17th edition wiring regulations course, i'll probably be put through the PAT testing course, just dont know what else to get put through.

HNC    Elect.   Do  you NEED anything else ?    When  I was at college the next step from there was a degree in Electrical Engineering .

Probably talking through my aristotle as they kept altering the qualifications for sparkdom.

The least requirement back in the day was a C&G  A   .

I remember back when we (the class)  had finished our apprenticeships & the technicians cert was the next exam, but we were told not to do it as there were only 5 technicians positions in London (JIB registered companies)  and we would then be over qualified to work as electricians. Good old union ruled times, NOT

I remember them well Oh  Slippery one !!

When employed I was  Approved Grade , there were weird rules like ,you would run jobs with 5 Electricians ( or something!)  at your normal hourly rate , but if it was a bigger job with more labour your rate went up by a shilling  (5p)  ( was it  ? )   The responsibilities imposed by the firms made it not worth the money ....although it was a learning curve.

I came  across Tech grade sparks working at Approved rates all the time as no one would employ them because of the (then) high rate.

Union rules Eh !    The ETU ( the one run the Communists ) and then the  EEPTU didn't think much of us contractors I'm afraid ,as we were difficult to organise ......... the sparks employed in the big industrial plants and car factories came first .......we were nobodies to them .

Oh those were the days, i actually caved in and took a chargehand position for extra 10p, but then moved onto Foreman, on a 2 million job at Esso Research, went up to 25p extra for that but it was good for CV, however the stress gave me the s***s for the whole duration of the contract.

As foreman I was able to book myself in every Saturday, so a nice touch.
