I would be interested to hear what professional electricans consider the facets and aspects of a tradesman work that makes them great electricians rather than OK/ Average.

Some are highly technical .

Some are mainly practical .

In all trades there will always be some more knowledgable than others .

The main thing with an ordinary "Sparks"  is ,in my opinion, whether he cares about what he's doing , then at least what he does will be safe and done to an acceptable standard.  If he finds something he.s not familiar with he asks ...learns and evenutally becomes "Great"

How do you define "Great" ?    Is it a sparks who can throw 40mtrs of steel conduit up in a day but can't be sent out to an industrial breakdown ?

Is it these guys who live and breathe the Regs but don't know how to open a toolbox?

I would agree with Deke...

It's the ability to know your limitations and knowing when to ask others for help or advice.

and treating the premises that your working at as if they were your own

as said above, apart from a sound knowledge of regs and correct installation methods, attitude to the customer is the key to everything.

Everything above

Listening

Not thinking you are better than the last bloke....even if you are

Accept your limitations

If in doubt ASK

Accept criticism

Dont think you know everything because you have a bit of paper that "says" you do

Every day is a learning day

Leave the customer thinking....."well I never expected them to do THAT as well"......as opposed to "well I won't be having that prat back again"

If you "can't" then "don't"!

People can DIE because of your ignorance

Spark of the year would be the role model to follow maybe?

Doc H.

Well far be it for me to suggest such a thing ....... I mean  yes I do happen to be Spark of the century  Year ..but I never talk about it . :innocent
Modesty, yeah that is a good trait for a Spark, yeah modesty

That and humility

Modesty and humility

And self deprecation

Modesty humility and self deprecation

Oh, and a BFO trophy

So. Modesty humility and self deprecation and a BFO trophy......and a garage full of discarded unwanted escort van bin racking

Oh yes it does .......I cut a 2" section out of the slamming strip ..............problem solved .  This where genius comes in see..... Stepps would let his tyres down to back in ........Specs would have jack hammered the floor out .......Noz would have sold the van ..... :innocent

And Canoeboy would have connected up some motorised jack system to raise the whole roof as you drive in then lower back down once inside......

Bit like Thunderbirds with trees & swimming pools etc...  moving out of the way as you enter / exit...

all controlled from an app of his i-phone..
