When I joined the forum a short time ago I had been a member of another forum which was for Caravanner's.

I left that forum due to a number of people with bad attitudes in that they had the impression they were gods gift to the camping world.

In the main, this forum is far more friendly and the members are mostly helpful but I do notice from time to time the odd "caustic remark" perhaps not intentionally.

This brings me to the danger in the written word as there is no body language or facial expressions to see so we tend to rely on the "smiley" to indicate our feelings or even hide the true emotion.

I often ask people how many different ways the following words could be interpreted :-

YOU WANT ME TO BUY HER A GIFT

I think this is a great way of explaining that what you read can often be totally different to what is intended and in this case is purely due to the lack of punctuation.

The sentence consists of eight words and can be interpreted in eight different ways depending on the reader. Just try it and see if you can get eight totally different meanings.

I am pleased to see that the forum is working as it should in that members are mainly helpful so we accept to occasional caustic comment or reply which is not intended to help as one person said in a post.......

"you can please some of the people some of the time"

I really do enjoy reading the posts and I thank all members for adding a new dimension to my days.

I also send my thanks to the Moderators for keeping us all in line, a job I would not take on that's for sure.

Anyway, my intention was to say I enjoy the forum and thank all who take part but do I now have to Test and issue certificates for the above.

The members of this forum do a pretty good job of moderating themselves,

as you say the written word can, and does sometimes get misinterpreted.

Which is why we ask when posting a question or reply, please think about how you phrase it. The more information we have the easier it is to understand and reply.

Members are not immune to "caustic" replies, we only ask it is never personal, and if you can not reply politely then do not reply.

The forum is open to all and is not an exclusive fully qualified and certified group.

Like in real life sometimes things deserve a caustic reply IMHO!

Various ones get my goat, but the biggest one is 'this job is for assessment, so I want it to be right'. Oooh, I could be very harsh here, but ALL your work should be to standard and IMHO the assessor should pick the job to see, not you!

We also have people who seem like they are going to kill them-self or someone else and and enquiry to their competence can't be a bad thing? We can't be nice to everyone however much of a prat they are. Sometimes it needs pointing out!

But I agree, the forum does a good job of self moderation, and on the whole it's a nice friendly place that includes all.

:D

Agreed

He who knows not

and know not that he knows not

Is a fool

Shun him

He who knows not

and knows that he knows not

Can be taught

Teach him

He who knows

and knows not that he knows

is asleep

Wake him

He who knows

and knows that he knows

is a prophet

Follow him
