My lad is hassling me to connect his Wii to internet. Don't want to go to wireless router, but am in market for new PC, so was thinking of getting WifI (hardwire link to internet) PC, but will it connect to Wii????

We've got my daughters Wii connected to our wireless router.. not a problem..

If you're worried about the security then if you have a totally random WEP2 key then that will help, you could also restrict wireless access by registering the Wii's MAC address as the only one which is allowed wireless access. You could still connect your PC with a patch lead to the router.

There are lots of ways of securing wireless networks, normally, depending on what "router" you have.

Ours is hidden, has a password & is MAC address locked to the allowable devices.

That is I have to connect to the router with a wired pc before I can connect wirelessly and enter the password then the MAC address of the wireless connection required.

WIFI means wireless free therefore you would need a wireless router.

Isn't that an Oxymoron...

looked it up..

A common misconception is that the term Wi-Fi is short for "wireless fidelity," however this is not the case. Wi-Fi is simply a trademarked term meaning IEEE 802.11x.

binky yes you can hard wire from your non wifi router to your pc and to the wii

provided your router has 2 or more out ports?

don't blame you either much faster internet with wired

ah don't know about that noz. just presumed as all other platforms have a ethernet port

Do not see any advantages and many disadvantages to doing it this way. Suggest you get a wireless router. Most ISP's supply them free these days too.

the advantage is quicker internet

as you said most isp provided routers will be wireless so just setup the wii with the passkey and have you pc wired

Doubtful you'll see any difference in internet speed wired or wireless due to the speed restrictions from your isp, wi-fi is much quicker than almost all isp connections.

Peer 2 peer or domain )server) based internal networks where you transfer files, work on files on remote drives print to remote computers etc. then wired is noticeably quicker.

If you can get 1GB wired between 2 devices that works then this is almost as quick as your local HDD!

When we did not have a wireless router and the PC was wired to the internet, we had a Nintendo USB Wii dongle for connecting the Wii to the internet (wirelessly) via the PC. I still have it and it's in perfect condition. As I remember it was about

Aggies wii is connected wirelessly to our router,

but the network is hidden, mac address locked, and the password is changed every week.

anyone who has ever used BACKTRACK3 will tell you how open any form of wifi really is.

I have over 30 wifi networks I can pick up, 28 of them are password protected, and only 3 of those are actually hidden,

you can only hide the network, not the signals to and fro,

I can access every single one of the wifi networks I can pick up(even locked and hidden ones),(my broadband was down for a bit one week), and I know jack about computing,

just think what a hacker could do.!?!?!?!?

Im looking into getting one of these USB to ethernet adapter thingies, need to find out about them a bit more though first, and compatability.

what's the range of wifi then??? Security is always an issue with any form of wireless connection, and whilst the encryption has improved it necessarily 'light' to improve speed oc connections, hence easily hackable by those who know how. Identity thieves charter.

My other reason for not wanting wireless in basically it works poorly in my house due to relative locations of PCs and Wii, so have run cat cable whilst doing some decorating between locations, but still wanted to avoid wireless router to Wii, which is unfortunately located close to one PC but not with any easy access for running hidden cables. I will probably have to do this anyway, as I still have the wireless router I used before, but will attempt to restrict range by detaching aerials. I was hoping really to link direct to PC close to Wii (wirelessly) without having more cables/gadgets/energy wasting nonsense to clutter up the house, but doesn't look like this is viable.

I've our Wii on our N spec wirless network and never had any speed issues. I've been able to watch an hours episode of Top Gear on BBCI player via the Wii without having to wait for it to download and not received a single frame stutter. My wireless signal dosen't go far enough outside my property to get hacked. I'd spot your van sitting in my drive I assure you.

you just need someone with a 36GdBi antenna pulling your signal in...

for what you need with your wii I would suggest signing your pc up as a server and only accept from one mac address (the wii) then hide the wifi signal. close all the other ports(except the one the wii uses) and you should be fine.

after thats its simply down to paranoia.

Cheers I do use the mac address filtering but haven't hidden my network. My main security is 115 year old solid stone walls that block everything. The signal only escapes through 1 window that nobody has line of sight on due to a large boundry wall, hence you need to be in my drive to even attempt to hack it.

These old buildings do cause a nightmare trying to use wireless in the house though, most of my network is hardwired but had to use 1 room on one of those homeplug devices as it's too much hassle to put a cat5 in there.

PS did you know that castlehill lives in Edinburgh Castle :) (only Kidding)

PPS Well done Castlehill on passing your 17th last Friday, (I was on the same course)

Cheers Steve
