Hi there,

I want to install an inset imitation electric fire to my open fireplace and would like to know if the regulations require that the fire be wired into a switched fused spur or whether it can just be plugged in to a nearby socket. The fire has come with a moulded plug on it so I assume the latter is true.

I might rent my home in the coming months so would also like to know if this makes any difference to how the fire is connected to the mains.

Many thanks,

Andrew

I fitted one recently that was bought from b&q which came with a moulded plug to be plugged in a local socket. I don't like seeing cable and neither did customer so I hard wired with switched fused connection unit. Up to you though

What do the instructions say matey ?

If it came with a plug then the manufacturer thinks that is acceptable, though obviously not particularly neat.

If you leave it like that, and are renting the house, don't forget it will need PA testing (along with the fridge, washing machine etc)

The instructions don't say anything about any special wiring requirements, I was just concerned about the regulations for the appliance if the house is rented, but thanks to yours, ProDave's and steptoe's replies I'm happy to plug it in. I can run the cable under the floor boards and just pop it up near the plug so won't be too untidy.

Thanks all for your advice.
