IMHO solar is carp here in the UK and if you have them in a wood with lots of sunlight blocked they will be worse. May get 30 seconds of run time per day ;) .

Ian.

you would need lots of solar panel and lots of batteries to make/store enough electricity for what you want to do with it. it would be much cheaper pay someone

I reckon you should use 150W MHs rather than halogens. They have about the same light output as a 500W halogen, but with only about 40% the power consumption.

Even with a load of only 800W, over 800m I reckon you'll defo need 10mm and probably 16mm cable (haven't done the calcs properly, just in my head). 800m of 16mm 2 core swa at TLC prices is

Hmm, cable is out of the question at that price. If i used a 2kw generator over a distance of approx 100m would i get away with using 4mm swa and would it power the lights at that distance?

why go to the hassle of getting a genny and placing it 100mtr away?

you can get something like a honda EX650 which are very quiet standing next to it, or a larger genny & make an enclosure for it

its to illuminate a badger sett for public viewing, sorry probably should have mentioned that at the start!

id have guessed white light will frighten the badgers to be honest, but if infrared lighting was used, with a couple of day/night cameras linked to a viewing screen where the public could say watch the images then that wouldnt inerupt with the badgers territory

Isn't this illegal?

And don't badgers only come out in the dark?

I think someones taking the michael!

its illegal to interfere with a sett, harm them, set dogs on them etc, we are just watching them and will be doing so very discreetly in a hide, i have been to places where they illuminate with white light and it doesnt bother them, obviously the lights are high in the trees out of the way. The welfare of the badgers wont be compromised.

and yes loonytune, badgers do come out in the dark, thats why we are talking about putting lighting up!!
