i wouldn't consider any other way myself unless the "shed" is part of the main building.

hello chaps, have to quote for a job, guy wants kiln in a shed and sockets light etc...

would you TT it?

thanks

paul
Would we also be assuming the following are true

1/ this is not a totally wooden structure as it is having a Kiln inside?

2/ quite a beefy supply for the Kiln?

3/ kiln could well have some big exposed metal parts, (sort of oven like)?1

I would be thinking TT

how far is it from the house?

ok chaps, been to see it.

its 2m from the main house, and yes SL it is a wooden building.

the guy has 'wired' the first fix in, he asked for me just to cert it, of course i declined and said i would want to rip out all of his cables.

anyway, said kiln is a 8kw 3ph and he is on single ph, is there a way of converting? he has had it running but said it never got to the correct temp. he also used 2x 2.5 twin & e to power it, better than 1 i suppose lol.

the house is a TT with the earth rod concereted in a boiler room, did a Zs and came out at 45.7 though, so ok with that. as for the bondings, water is a plastic pipe out of ground to stop cock then to copper. do i need to bond?

thanks

Erm.. is the said Kiln new or a second hand got it from a mate job?

Are there any manufactures instruction available?

I would want to see the manufactures guidance as to whether it can run single phase and/or 3phase?

before doing anything else..

you may be wasting your time on a No-hope job! :(

If you convert it will end up being 24kw single phase, so quite large! You could run an inverter to give 3 phase from single phase, but then you're running into the thousands (or maybe just one) to get that fitted and working before doing anything else.

Personally, I'd just tell him the above and watch him decide against having anything done before getting too involved in it and wasting your time.

8kW isn't going to become 24kW just because you rewire for single-phase operation. If the kiln has three 240V elements each connected phase-to-neutral, then assuming a balanced load across the phases, each element will be about 2.7kW. Rewiring the elements in parallel to operate on single-phase will still result in a total power of around 8kW, just all from a current of a little over 33A on the 1-ph supply instead of just over 11A on each phase from a 3-ph supply.

If the elements are 415V types connected phase-to-phase, then it won't be possible to get the full power with a simple change of wiring configuration.

I think it's easier to convert it to coal or gas than to get it running on mains with the situation you have!!

Walk away !!

Mike.

I'm thinking of something else then, sure I've had this issue before and something was wired as 3x single phase to make 3 phase. Suppose it would depend on the manufacturer, but given the above I'm not sure why it would have been 3 single phase devices. Must have been a reason......
