Ive got an exam coming up and am not sure about one thing when I have taken my zs reading at a cooker outlet.I have to make sure the outlet is dead when I put my cover back on its just how the place wants it.Cant I just switch it off at the cooker switch and put the cover back on while Im there I mean yes the cooker switch is live but its off and I am there anyway to make sure no one switches it on?Or take my zs reading turn cooker switch off go to the board isolate and padlock then put the cover back like that I think I will do my 2nd option as they say to isolate all the circuits when im taking a cover off and isolating when putting a cover back on I do this with the other circuits lighting etc just need putting straight about it am practicing at home on a board and am thinking is this rite or what lol ryan ?

In this case the safest isolation practice would be at the switch, let me explain. Firstly if the circuit was isolated at the CU, you can then safely remove the cover, but you would need to re-energise the circuit leaving live terminals for the amount of time it would take to get back from the CU to the cooker outlet. If the house was occupied and instruction has been given to the occupants of the dangers, you could never really rely on them to observe this danger. However if the cu was in the same room, or if it was a mock board exam, then you would always isolate at the CU and not at the switch. Switches can be used to isolate, but must be treated with extreme caution, and tested as if it was from the CU.

I see what your saying the further away the cooker switch and cooker outlet is u should start thinking about using the switch as an isolation. The exam I am doing the cooker switch and cooker outlet are 5 yards away from the board so I might as well isolate and padlock at the board cheers for clearing that up !

If the means of isolation is under your control, i.e. right next to you then no need to lock it off, as long as you dont wander off leaving exposed terminals.

The circuit will have to be energised to get Zs, so no point in locking off at CU.
