    Smoke Detectors & Building Regs

On a new build i am currently at the local building inspector has insisted smoke and heat detectors are fitted to all habital rooms. Gotta get an earth

I dont agree with all of this. The SWA should be earthed at the supply end. This means it does not need 'RCD protection in line with the new regs if less than 50mm deep in wall or ground' Putting that aside my views are an RCD in this type of situation should be at the garage/shed/outbuilding end.

Lighting with no earth - options and 1950's cable sizing help

Unfortunately you shouldn't if any metal lights/ switches are present. I know it would make it safer but you would be working on and certifying a circuit that does not meet BS7671. To save replacing all metal backboxs you can get plastic 3.5mm screws such as these...

    neutral at a switch

Dont know , as i said i was taught it as being good workmanship and i guess its the OP answer. Edit, Also, most connector blocks now are rubbish, they have skimmed so much metal away they either split along the bottom or the thread strips. This doesnt seem to happen to the hard types

    neutral at a switch

Why ? BS pvc cable has a higher rated temp than non marked nylon connector blocks

    neutral at a switch

Hi, i was taught to use Bakelite type connectors at switches. These are nowadays replaced with the harder plastic types, not the cheap nylon ones. The reason was, the householder may swap the switch for a dimmer which will get hot. This in turn could melt the connector. Yep i agree its unlikly...
