Should you judge a tradesman on tool choice?

I'll not disclose publicly if that's ok..............

170 piece socket set £120 with card £150 without. Tool kit £18 with and £50 without. £5 off the ratchets. Since the card is free you might as well have one https://www.halfords.com/advice/motoring/trade-card/trade-card

The saw on rails is so very accurate and dust free with the extractor. The Halfords professional ratchet spanners are nice and you are all eligible for a trade card as electricians.

DIY Cable from Bungalow to outside garage

I would also like some of you to think what motivates people to do work themselves. I have a decent job and I could afford to pay someone to do the work for me but I enjoy doing it myself and it's convinient. If I want to put up a new outside light (job for later) then it's vastly easier...

Should you judge a tradesman on tool choice?

This thread made me think: If I was paying you to do a job for me and you turned up with a full toolkit from Aldi I think I'd be rather worried. One of the worst builders I ever met had got most of his toolkit from the Screwfix budget range and he was a borderline cowboy. When I was younger I...

mac allister folding table vs keter folding table

A pair of these: https://www.toolstation.com/toughbuilt-saw-horse/p29945#reviewTab 2 lengths of 2X4 and a sheet of shuttering ply and you have a very strong, very stable work bench. I have it set up as a sacrificial top for cutting with the circular saw.

    Secondary consumer unit

moved to DIY. My shed wired in metal clad with T&E clipped to the walls. The powertools havn't left the bench and drilled through anything as yet. Plastic conduit would be fine but do as you please

    cooker off ring main

Fixed loads should be on dedicated circuits, but does that make this 'unsafe' even if not up to the regs? If you can put on dedicated circuits with little disruption then do so. You want DP isolation for the immersion as they can commonly corrode and start tripping RCDs.

    Secondary consumer unit

Would you like me to move this to the DIY section? I think my main fuse is 80A and when I add up all the MCBs in the consumer unit it comes to a much higher number........... [not an issue, fuse is to stop wires of the circuit melting in the event of a fault] Why 32A radial? Why metal conduit...

    Extractor Fan replacement - ensuite

Do you know where the fan vents to? You could close the door with it running and set off a smoke bomb? Get someone looking outside. As long as you don't have sprinklers etc

DIY Cable from Bungalow to outside garage

If you are keen to learn more then you can pick up a decent means of measuring that yourself. I started off with some old Robin separate testers off ebay...

DIY Cable from Bungalow to outside garage

The whole point is this is supposed to be a friendly place with a dedicated DIY section. One of the forum owners is a DIYer who does a bit of his own electrical work and has a reasonable understanding of how these things work.............

DIY Cable from Bungalow to outside garage

@Murdoch do remember that we pride ourselves on being friendly. This is in the DIY section of the forum. Much better someone comes on here than trails a 50m extension lead out of the bedroom window for the next 10 years. Help, be constructive or stay out of the DIY section. Thanks

    Adding Spur sockets

You can put what you want on the end if it's through a fuse. The hydroponic cannabis factory may need more power though! Have you got a modern fuseboard and are the sockets already protected by a 30mA RCD?

    Calculating Ze

Confused by what exactly? Ze testing or live working? This thread is good and should answer your questions. Summary - you can Ze test live, there is no other way of verifying earth. Remove parallel paths first. Testing live different to working live.

mac allister folding table vs keter folding table

I wouldn't buy either. I googled and they look cheap plastic rubbish. Maybe ok for some occasional DIY for the missus on a bank holiday weekend but not really a tool for a tradesman IMO. Hence my question - what are you trying to achive, and how can we suggest something not from Toys R Us to...
