RCD in consumer unit keeps popping, replaced with new one, still same issue

I already said it has merit when fault finding but the proper sequence proves that the RCD is operating within its parameters. So other than fault finding it offers no benefit.  A 15mA test proves it's not tripping at 10mA. How are you unconvinced of that incontrovertible fact?

The half-current test already proves that it doesn't.

RCD in consumer unit keeps popping, replaced with new one, still same issue

I think you're missing the point. I'm not denying that a ramp test could be useful as a fault finding tool - what I am stating is that it isn't of any use to determine whether an RCD is operating within its parameters or not. That is verified by normal RCD testing, which is precisely why the...

RCD in consumer unit keeps popping, replaced with new one, still same issue

I don't disagree, but they certainly aren't needed to prove whether the RCD is operating correctly. What needs to be remembered is that a 30mA RCD can legitimately operate anywhere between 16mA and 30mA.

RCD in consumer unit keeps popping, replaced with new one, still same issue

Seriously? I don't agree that ramp testing is required to verify that an RCD operates correctly. The prescribed tests (half current; I delta n and 5 I delta n) prove this.

Any views on the Pimlico Plumbers case this week?

Charlie Mullins is a scum rat.

    Spot The Fault (s)

NYM-J does not comply with any British Standard. (It is a VDE cable.) It's not suitable for BS7671 installations. That said any of the NYM-J I have used has been brown/blue/green & yellow in 3-core. However, the colours you have mentioned (if indeed it is produced with those) could be used...

    Spot The Fault (s)

NYM-J. Very commonly used in the south of Ireland. Somewhat similar to Hi-Tuff except it's not UV tolerant. You absolutely cannot argue that as it is clearly defined that the phase (other than in a polyphase circuit) must be brown.

    Polarity

I suspect (s)he is. What brand of test equipment are you using?

Do I need a new consumer unit?

YOU are the consumer. Are you sure you want to be replaced?

    Earth Wires - uninsulated

Registered Electrical Contractor. You will notice REC # whatever written on electrical contractors' vans in Australia. (Certainly I have seen it in Victoria.)

    Earth Wires - uninsulated

Surely if you are in Australia then you should be using a REC with licensed Electricians. You will be breaking the law (and rightly so) by touching it yourself.

    Alternative to cable clips

They can shoot into steel and concrete. I have a gas actuated Hilti gun. There are also explosive actuated guns by Hilti though.

    Henly block

What rule prohibits this then? I don't believe any of them do.

    Henly block

I disagree. How is an isolator a "similar switchgear assembly" to a domestic distribution board? I disagree. How is an isolator a "similar switchgear assembly" to a domestic distribution board?

Location of FCU for Shower Pump

Not sure I agree. In many cases it is the only option. Certainly note the location of it down on the installation certificate

Location of FCU for Shower Pump

I don't see an issue with a screwdriver being needed to access a bath panel. What's the big deal?

    Comparative sizes for SWA

It is accepted as a means of verifying it on an already energised system. Dead testing is essential for initial verification as you need to verify it is safe to connect to the supply. For an EICR the supply is already connected. GN3 states that it is an acceptable method therefore to verify cpc...

    Comparative sizes for SWA

I'll have to ask. Why are you conducting an (R1+R2) test having already verified cpc continuity through a live Zs test in an already energised installation?

Help with a weird light switch?

As I stated earlier, it is a junction box. It's purpose is to act as a junction for cables. It's difficult to conceive how that could be the case with a single cable entering, however, unless it is to override what was a switch be connecting permanent and switched phase (line) conductors together.
