Do I need a new consumer unit?

He's already decided how much he want to charge you but hasn't quite worked out how to justify it

I had the misfortune to take the cover off this CU today ......

You don't really need colour coded wires when the terminals are clearly marked 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    Smartmeter install

"Some Dude" was probably wrong then. More likely the Meter Changer reported a cracked fuseholder or something similar .

    Any telephone bods on here?

Before getting excited check the spec on the virgin box. A lot of the 'Fibre to analogue telephone outputs /converters are only good for 2 basic telephones at a time (more if cordless /electronic)

    Maximum Demand exceeded

A history of overheating or blown main fuses would be unsatisfactory. All-Electric House with 2 showers, massive ovens/hob and an EV charger on a 60A fuse maybe also so . . Otherwise you are a) Guessing b) Making unsafe assumptions that Breaker Ratings somehow reflect maximum demand rather...

    Fitting a Cooker Extractor Hood

If you have seen the things CE marked that I've seen you wouldn't even bother looking for it any more

Is it normal for a pv installation to send some power to grid despite battery not being fully charged?

You can only really judge this with empty batteries - they should have a major power appetite and on a dull day initially swallow all the panels /converters can provide. But it's not like filling a bucket from the tap. By 80% the charging process /rate is necessarily slowing down due to...

    AC/DC power supply with 19.5V 7.9A issue

So if you asked me as an electronics engineer to decide which high voltage electrolytic would be a safe choice to install and leave down the back of a desk for another 10 years I'd politely decline the job. The supply was built with an expected life that has now passed. By replacing the...

New consumer unit required - does it mean none fire rated down lighters need replacing?

Also confused - no such rule on ‘sum of breakers’ and rarely possible to achieve that

    AC/DC power supply with 19.5V 7.9A issue

What ESR are you looking for ? What ripple current rating? What makes you think the rest of the PSU is still within its design life now some components are failing? Are you happy if you prolong its life to then experience an overheating type failure The power block is easily...

Electric meter - end of life

To be fair I've worked for a number of Utility companies and never saw a new tariff or innovation get agreed /funded/rolled out that wouldn't make them more money overall even if it did have some headline 'shiny bits' for the customers. This was definitely so for smart meters which reduce...

Electric meter - end of life

I was reading on one of the cyber security forums that some (early I presume) smart meters are fairly easily hacked to shut off the supply 'for laughs' using the remote disconnect functionality while others will shortly lose their 3G based connectivity and become dumb again. I'll be ready to...

    Advice please

Yep - that model is available under a number of names. Mine doesn't read anything until a few watts are drawn and doesn't become accurate until 5 or 6 watts but then pretty good at all higher wattages

What caused this pcb to blow out?

And just in time to illustrate the last point - this afternoon's job was a lithium battery charger that didn't like to start charging. Poor hand soldered joints on the input socket (among other places) hadn't survived life's inevitable stresses. Not even sure I can blame no-lead solder in...
