As a follow up to 'Rip off Russ' thread

Silver oxidises very quickly. People had to be always polishing the silver.

    Frequency question

Generally, after the examiners realise their error, both answers would be given credit.

    Frequency question

Plumber: You seem to be assuming the capacitor value is in uF, whereas it is stated in the OP to be in Farads.

    Frequency question

    Capacitive reactance Xc = 1/(2*pi*f*C) Inductive reactance Xl = 2*pi*f*L if these are equal: 1/(2*pi*f*C) = 2*pi*f*L so 4*pi*pi*f*f*L*C = 1 so f = SQRT(1/L*C) * 1/(2*pi) = SQRT (1/(.318 * 38.9)) * 1/(2*pi) = 0.0452 Hz

    GU10 Lamps options

I just fitted LED GU10s in our new kitchen, 7 altogether, to replace the 50W halogens which came with the fittings. We started with 4 at 3W each as an experiment, decided we liked them but bought 3 more at 5W each. In practice they are plenty bright, though I wish we had gone for warm white...

    Testing Videos

Shame in 'Safe Isolation' that he seems to say 'between earth and neutral there should be no current' though.

    IR Heaters at a bar

Waste of money. It will reduce the heating effect in proportional to the money saved. So it's equivalent to just turning off one of the heaters, which would save buying the gadget. I won't start on about my opinion of heating the outside though... headbang

Can a fuse in a plug be used to protect a cable with no other overcurrent protection?

The original question allowed only Yes or No answers. The real answer is 'it depends'. If the circuit is less than 3m then the fusing is allowed at the load end. Can't remember the reg number off hand. This is quite ignoring the special case ring final which is allowed, for historical reasons...

If you look closely you might spot something here...

So, anyone got a picture of one of these solid neutral bars?

If you look closely you might spot something here...

Ah, thanks! I appreciate your taking the time to help me out. So there is a break in the busbar between the visible tabs, although it is hidden behind the cover. Obviously there must be or there would have been a big bang the first time it was switched on! And those neutral bars left and right...

If you look closely you might spot something here...

I just guessed that the manufacturer may have made different types over the years, so just something to help look up a data sheet on the internet? I'll do a search for Hager. Thanks.

If you look closely you might spot something here...

I would appreciate knowing what make and type of CU that was, as I came up with a different answer and need to know how that type gets wired. Obviously not all the wiring runs are visible, and the bus bar(s) are concealed. TIA

    Important Product Recall Notification

Please consider the possibility that this is an elaborate scam. The website domain is not Wylex's and is registered to a private individual. If I recall correctly the phone number is a premium rate one. So you end up giving them your customers names, plus your money.

    78megohms rcd disturbance

Yes, that way you measure the difference in current, just the way that the RCD does. However the clamp meter must be able to measure from mA's upwards. Most clamp meters aren't sensitive enough.

    78megohms rcd disturbance

Well, 6 uA is not going to trip an RCD, so first check the functioning of the RCD in isolation, and if it's OK, use an earth leakage clamp meter on each circuit's line and neutral together, to find out which circuit has a high earth leakage, then unplug each appliance on that circuit in turn...

    Am I missing something?

I'm not really in a proper state to comment at the moment, but... Assuming the derating factors are not a problem, a 100m ring is a standard 2.5mm circuit in the OSG. The current draw should be distibuted around the ring, rather than loading it all at the furthest point. If you really did this...
