Both cases sound like cheapo lamps to me , lets face it , almost everything we buy in our trade is of an inferior quality these days .

Outside fittings these days don't even have captive screws now ......one slip from freezing fingers and you're searching for a screw for 1/2 hour .
or they have that little O ring. that sticks to the wrong side so the screw still gets lost

I know exactly what you mean there Andy.

And , with a typical PIR 500w floodlight , why are the fixing holes so damn big , head of the screw falls straight through and you can't get the screwdriver in without taking the bracket off . And you know that when the power is on, you'll have to climb back up to pi$$ about with the stupidly small , black on black, setting adjusters .

for the floodlights, i hae a 300mm extension bar for my drill - hold them in the right place and you can screw them to the wall without having to remove light from bracket

and then the screw always rusts so when it comes to a new lamp, they dont open (except mine, always put a little copper grease on them)

my 2p worth. end contacts get dirty, poorly located lamps even, cause arcing poor contact and build up of heat causing premature lamp failure. Just my experience of these horrible lamps. Remember the first time I came across one and replaced the tube with the power on and it went bang and I spent the rest of the day pulling fragments of glass out of my hand. The foolish things apprentices do.

If the ceramic ends don`t seat properly onto the contact pins; or the pins have got dirty / blackened / corroded, the excessive contact heat causes premature failure of the lamp.

Ensure the pins are (very)clean on the ends - and the lamp locates properly and securely into position. We had a lad who fitted 40 of the 500w tubes - which either failed to work, or blew within a few mins.......Turned out he hadn`t seated them properly in the housing......... X(
