3.5mm Tap

Hi,

Is it worth getting a 3.5mm tap for when the lugs on backboxes become cross threaded.

If so wheres best to get one from cos its not worth buying a set of taps and dies just for the 3.5mm one used for re-threading lugs

I think they are called thread runners and wholesalers are best bet, I get the longer version as they reach the parts others dont!

get one. will get you out of many situations. there only a few

even when the lug is completely wrecked you can drill and tap the back of the box and use an extra long screw. saying that, I havent got one at the mo....

Wholesalers will have one , Tower Brand do one with a small screwdriver style handle, you can't leave home without one TBH .

real valuable tool, mines a draper one about the size of a small screwdriver.

Or similar.. make sure you get one with a long shaft..

e.g.

some only have a short shaft approx 25mm

whereas others are 50mm!

you will need the length on some back-boxes..

such as when they are sunk behind tiles!

I was told you can't beat a longer shaft!

I use mine all the time. I even run it through the threads on new boxes - it's surprising how even small amounts of debris can damage the screw threads.

That has become my standard practice over recent years..

The quality of threads on most back boxed is just a lump of doggy doo IMHO!

And if the screws are a bit softer you end up wrecking the screw threads before you even got the bloomin socket on! :_|
