Sorry lads, looks like I have started something last night!

Would a picture help if I can get down to the shop?

possibly....

easiest way to see if its split phase is to measure the phase-phase voltage. should be 400v for TP or 460 for split. or 0 if its all the same phase with multiple fuses

Don't be sorry mate, everyone has different ways to interpret things. So while someone takes it as single phase and another at 3phase. The main thing is that we say why we think this, so you can make your own mind how you would interpret it.

So in reallity theres no right or wrong answer just the way you see it.

Well I can easily measure the phase to phase voltage between the different consumer units, but the third phase or fuse I cannot access as I am not about to start cutting the seals.

Thanks for all your help, will let you know next week what the outcome is;)

you dont need the 3rd phase. if its 400 P-P then its 120 deg apart, then its almost guaranteed to be TP. if its 460v then its 180 deg apart, and if there is anything connected to the 3rd fuse, itll be one of the other phases looped to it

Hi Andy,

I am sure I understand what you are saying about the phases being so many degrees apart and this determines the P-P voltage. However, I am not really accustomed to split phase supply so will do a bit of research on this as I am sure I didnt cover this when I did my 2330 course.

is the property in a built up area, or out in the sticks? is it overhead supply? if so, how many lines?

split phase is not something ive ever came accross in my local area (built up). only worked on it whilst out in the sticks somewhere
