prob a silly question to most but how is 3p usage metered. I was told by someone that the meter will charge for the heaviest loaded phase but am unsure. please can someone clarify. cheers

Yes 3 phase meters measure all phases.

you can get 3 phase supplies but single phase meters normally used for small 100 amp 3 phase supplies, where each phase is seperated to each meter.

When you get to really big supplies you are metered by your peak useage... Don't know the specifics I'm afraid
Its all to do with how and why you are using electricity.

Every new build now has to incorporate a devise for precise monitoring of consumption and when and how the peak times occur.

It is suposed to reduce your bills rather than charge you more.

It helps to identify where usage is at its maximum so you could perhaps change normal practices to conserve energy.

so that the thinking behind MEMs new range of boards incorporating meters? This is to do with Part L?

Yes its more important for comercial and industrial where the regulations for energy Part L effect them the most.

There is more wasted energy on lighting than any other electrical system, which is why there is a push towards lighting controls and auto systems.

Another feature is that they claim the new generation of metering is far more accurate than the ones used by the supply company.
