If I remember this one correctly, the House holder switched on the power to make a cup of tea.

i do believe this is correct, i cant find the link with the info though.

But its why people should always put signs/locking off devices on :)

Signs alone are not an appropriate form of safe isolation, :(

they assume;

1/ other people can read!

2/ no one will accidentally switch on the breaker you have switched off.

Locking off devices, removal of fuses, and/or conductors to prevent accidental re-energising etc.. are far more safe methods...

Those of us who have annual assessments with any one of the various electrical contracting bodies, may gripe and moan about been asked to perform / verify safe isolation...

but these situations do remind us why correct isolation is NOT an optional extra to safe professional work practises. :|

Something my boys do, in particular the HED as appropriate.

Carelessness cost lives.

What you have said is very true.

I know I do not lock off everytime, and I am sure you lot do not!

Having said that, we certainly should be, only trouble is we get complacent with the inconveniance, we should its not what we do that kills us its what untrained, general public unawareness thet does.

I have a full set of mcb lock offs and almost never use them unless its a local government jobbie where they audit everything.

I wish I could be more safety orientated than I am, I work live because I am lazy in going to the db to turn it off.

Quite so GH:| :)

complacency and too much inconvenience is probably the true reasons for a lot of

"Accidental" injury's or worse fatalities! :( :|

TBH, I am finding now i am actually doing more proper 'locking' with domestic 17th ed compliant board cuz of the "staggered" arrangement of the circuit..

i.e. old board may have gone

Main switch

Shower

Cooker

Socket down

Socket up

Light down

Light UP

so lights were at one end of the board & high power stuff at the other end..

But the a same arrangement on a newer board may be..

RCD#1

Shower

Socket Down

Light up

RCD#2

Cooker

Socket up

Light down

You have to stop & check twice which circuit is which...

easier to spot the one you left a lock out on to ensue you are working safe! :)

if i know i can trust person not to turn power back on, then it gets left with breaker turned off/fuse removed. if there is a risk of someone turning the power on (like a place where many people may have access), it gets locked. i have a few different types of locks in my bag for this so dont need another trip back to van

Such a tragic loss of a young life , Safe isolation takes minutes, It was pumped into us at college , a warning notice and locking off devices and of course testing for dead , this is a tragic reminder to those taking short cuts in our industry , I feel for his family ... :(
