So ..the French navy escort them across the channel and our idiot governments have been housing them in luxury hotels until eventually they melt away into the illegal work places or start robbing the rest of us .

I have always maintained that when we pick up some floating migrants in the channel, we should take them back to France, where under international law, they should apply for asylum in the first safe country they reach.

It’s not that they don’t listen it’s they are too scared to talk about it for then they’d have to admit something is wrong with the system that they are responsible for, and heaven forbid they own up to being wrong.
Like few other things that go on in this country ...notice that the news media never follows up on what happens to the " Channel hoppers" when they land here. I'm begining to wish Nige was my MP instead of the one we have now .

ID cards is the only way forward and let’s not forget that because most EU countries have them, that’s why these people come here
totally agree, but some international shipping tradition prevents this I think? BIt like all those sinking boats in the Med, why don't they return them to Libya?
ID cards were cited a few years ago, can't remember why it didn't go forward? NI numbers should also make a clear distinction between UK residents and migrants.

this is not actually true. I remember back to a conversation I had with a certain David Blunkett a few years ago whereby he told me that when these immigrants arrive they are issued a NI number.
NI numbers are a red herring.
The amount of people working off radar is large and when they get caught they simply do everything in their power to withhold their true identity .. wasting valuable time for all the agencies concerned.
that's what I'm getting at, they get a NI number that is the same format as yours and mine, if it had a different format, then it would help reduce benefit fraud or charge their home country for use of the NHS.
I've always reckoned they should re-populate the outter Scottish islands with those who are here illegally or behave in a difficult manner...
well, a reasonable plan, but can I be there when you suggest it to the existing population as I suspect it won’t make you too popular
