It will never happen... i know an airline pilot.. He tells me that the planes all land themselves, in fact, the airlines have had to bring in a rule where the pilot lands the plane 50% of the time as they were getting out of practice.. He also tells me that although it could, the plane is NEVER allowed to take off itself. This is because, if something goes wrong, the computers on board flying the thing, lack the judgement as to what it would be best to do next..

The same with cars...

john..

Who would buy a car with auto drive software that would kill the drive and occupants in preference to killing persons outside the vehicle?

As Rob has said, someone has to write that code and justify, and not just in their own mind who they are going to kill.

A plane isn't anything like a car to make that comparison.

A plane isn't allowed to take off by itself, comparing that to an automatic car, that's the equivalent of not letting it off your drive by itself then the rest of the trip is done automatically.

A car is far more complex to control than a plane, simply because there are a lot more variables.

A truly automatic car will have algorithms to work out what is likely to cause less human damage in the event of an unavoidable collision. This is going to be based on cost of human life/how much to recall a product when it happens and nobody want to buy one of their cars etc...

Also bear in mind that an autonomous car has better reactions than a human counterpart, plus 100% concentration and it can't fatigue. So long as the peripherals are better than the human eye (another one that a lot of road users drive with less than perfect vision), they will be better than us at driving. They just don't have morals or a conscious.

Saying it will never happen is naive.

The in-car foorage has been released by the Police, a driver would have has less than 1 second to respond, I don’t know why the car didn’t have forward looking radar to pick up a moving obstacle though.

Surely if they are to be safer than a human driver, then a forward looking radar system linked to vehicle speed should be essential & should pick up a pedestrian in the road?

Where will it end. I like the idea of a riderless motorbike. As Mrs RevJ wont let me have a bike due to their dangerous nature, I could just send the riderless bike out on my favourite route and just sit here imagining what its like....

My van has a system where it will apply the brakes if it thinks you aren't going to .................... the only time it happened (which scared me rigid) was when a car in front, on a dual carriageway, braked really hard and turned left very abruptly.

My brain knew that by taking my foot off the throttle would allow me to slow enough not to have to brake, or change lanes - the computer though otherwise.

Not convinced about driver-less cars - BUT the appalling standard of driving by the taxis around here, I'm sure computers would improve safety ................. but what happens when they lose their connections to GPS?

GPS?

It's all based on cameras and sensors.

See here for more info:

I don't think relying on all this tech to avoid incidents is a great idea, it's too open to outside influence and causes the meaty bit behind the wheel to become complacent.

Plus there is more to go wrong & more expense in owning a vehicle.

As for mini cabs they should all be rounded up and fired into the sun, that green sticker on the back does not absolve you from driving like a normal responsible human being.
