hello people,

I have just purchase a light from john lewis, to replace a wall light in our lounge.  I didnt realise until i got home that the new light has a standard plug fitted.

Is this ok for me to hard wire it into the wall where the existing fitting is.  The existing fitting has had the hard wired  (wall) wires crimped to the existing wall light fitting.  I guess I can just do a straight swap and crimp in place the wires from the new light?

Thanks

ps, it might be worth mentioning that the new light only has two wires (no earth)  the existing light fitting has standard 3.

Just make sure the lamp is all fully functional and not damaged before you cut the plug off. Once you cut the plug off it could be tricky to get it replaced if it was faulty. Electrical loading and safety wise there should be negligible difference between being plugged in and hard wired, except one may be 3A plug top fuse and the other 5A or 6A lighting circuit fuse.

1/ don't chop the earth short, keep it ofr future use

2/ don't talk to me about IKEA light fittings - how some of these are legal I don't know, as for fitting the ruddy things :swear:
