Been asked to Extend a lighting circuit. They want Minimal damage to decor. Upstairs is all laminated flooring which would need destroying to access the void. There is a void behind the coving in the dining room i could use, but im unsure weather the regs would allow this, its technically in a safe zone but is it unsafe, circuit is already on the rcd side of the board.

Also if a house has a old Voltage Operated Unit, is it correct that no work should be carried out besides repairs until this is rectified?

Thanks for your replies.

Yes I have been told you have to at least Rcd protect circuit you are working on but a 17th edition consumer unit is probably the best option.

How long is the cable run you need to extend? ?:|

I would have thought at some point behind coving there would be an obstruction caused by cove adhesive? :(

You say the floor is laminated...But what about the decor on the ceiling below?

e.g. if it is just painted, it is not to difficult to cut access hole(s) in the plasterboard, run cables then screw a batten across the hole to re-fix the plaster board plug you previously took out back in.

Then just patch cracks with filler and re-paint!

IMHO if you can't lift floorboards or cut ceilings..

you have not much choice but to go surface {clipped, trunking or conduit} run. ;)

I would agree with special location on this one.

I had a similar job last year, I just dropped the whole ceiling and reboarded. However thats not required for an extention as you have.

Earth leakage breakers should be taken out.

Use a 4" cutter save the cut out plug replace after rodding the cables and screw to a batten then fill loverly jubly as they say down south.

Ceilings are Lath and Plaster, thinking surface with d-line trunking directly below the coving where it wont be noticeable, Should be able to get access from there. Coving has a cavity at the back but im concerned about someone ripping it down and damaging the cables at a later date so d-line seems to be my best bet for now. Going for a better look round in the morning.
