I tend to go in enough to get a good ammount of paster on the cables so probably ~20mm. Depending on plaster depth that could be before blockwork or in blockwork.

I also do not bother with capping if I am filling it myself.

So to clarify what i am reading , on new builds run cable down block work and cap directly on block work plasterer will cover up later , on rewires chase back to brick/block work run cable the cap then make good . So you dont actually chase into the brick/block work for normal T&E work ?
Basically, yes. Capping I tend to not bother with on dot and dab\dry lined walls. As above, capping on wet plaster I am not too bothered about one way or the other if I am patching, generally I fit it only where someone else is plastering wet plaster.

 
This one of my bones of contention, the regs state that you either use earthed metallic covering OR use safe zones and RCD/RCBO's. In my mind that rules out metal capping (used a lot on IOM and in my mind does not comply)

I chase in the safe zones through plaster and render and clip cables and clip straight to block (or stone which a lot of houses here are) if I know the plasterer isn't a hooligan. Or use slip tube if i'm not sure. In my mind the capping/slip tube provedes nothing in the way of protection and therefore is extra work for nothing and is dangerouus if metal.

Generally render and skim will cover cables clipped straight to brick/block without chasing.

Metal capping is fine, but it is not mechanical protection as per the requirements of a non-RCD'd circuit. That is the way it has always been, the capping is there to protect the cables during installation. It will not, and never has been known to, and should not be installed to, stop nails\drill bits\screws etc... penetrating cables after installation.

Yet another misconception 'we fit metal capping as the plastic stuff offers no protection to nails\screws\drill bits'. Neither will.
