my van is due for its 90,000 mile service which should include the timing belt. ive been looking at prices of all the bits on ebay as the local garages want to charge a fortune for bits i can get hold of for half the price. question is when replacing the cam belt do u require the complete kit which includes the tensioner and pulley or do you just replace the toothed belt? the difference in price is 50 odd quid so would prefer to only do whats nessecery. oh and the van is a vauxhall vivaro!

do it all, don't scrimp and scrape when it comes to your cambelt. if your tensioner or pulley seize then your cambelt new or not will still snap.

I did my belt and chain on my golf, bought all the gear but went against advice to get a proper VAG chain and got a GSF one for half the price, after 6months I got cam chain rattle.

Go to Honestjohn.co.uk and look for a car in the car by car breakdown that has the same engine. There should be some advice about which components to change.

Whichever bits need changing, my 24 yrs as a Professional Automotive R&D Engineer tells me this: BUY AN OE BELT FROM THE DEALER unless you can be sure the pattern item was made by GATES or GOODYEAR (two of the largest OE cambelt manufacturers).

just picked up my ispatch fron the garage this morning after a successful MOT

The guy asked when the belt was last changed,,i didnt know

Buy a Subaru, they are usually not damaged by a broken cam belt.

On my last car, that I had for 8 years, I changed the cam belt myself 3 times without changing any of the other parts. Same with my Wife's VW Golf, I changed that twice without changing other parts, but had a local garage change it this time (because it's a bit awkward on that car and I couldn't be bothered) and he replaced all the rollers and tensioner.

it amazes me that you could be so tight on something that you depend on so highly, how much would you lose in revenue if your cambelt snaps?

its no different to the guys that refuse to pay over
