I need to install 2kW oversink water heater in commercial premises. It will be used by staff for washing hands.
The question is: Do I really need to connect a heater to dedicated spur from the consumer unit? Can't I just connect it to the socket? Will I break any law/regulations if I do so? It's just 2kW.

fixed loads over 2kW should have their own circuit, but depending on use & existing load, it may be acceptable.  its down to you to decide if the circuit can take it

If it's 2KW @ 240V it might be a little under at 230V (which is what we are supposed to assume, even though it's never that low) so would be just under the reg that says it needs it's own circuit.

Personally if it was not too hard I would install a new circuit.

Your call really.

Thank you Andy. Can I plug it to normal socket or I need to use circuit breaker socket?

So, If I install 1 - 1.5 kW unit, it will be completely fine to connect it to socket?

1-1.5kw water heater... not seen any that size, and if you did fit one, i dont think your customer would be too happy wit the lack of hot water. good thing its not a 3 / 7Kw instant heater

If your doing this in a commercial premises you must be aware of the regulations. If you are, then your question is very basic and not one that any kind of payment should be taken for doing so.

I know this is in the DIY section, however there is a basic level of knowledge and a greater understanding of the statutory regulations to carry out this type of work.
