No  all the messages say  "The remote  server is not responding "   followed by a load of "Computer speak" about "invalid service name field for this connection , ask providor for correct value for this field and update in  Connection Properties.    :C

maybe an update has turned off the network or something?
Hi Stepps ,   Buggered if I know ....its not the lead anyway , 'cos thats in this lappy now & working ....this is just what I used to get all the time on the old Wanadoo/Orange network  hence the change to BT

Plug is in the same hole as before so must be OK.

Do you have all the correct lights lit (& correct colour) on your router?
Yes  thanks NOZ ....steady blue &  the lappy is using the router OK  , plugged in  not WIFI  . so Houston I have a problem with Desktop PC  it seems .  But no idea what to do TBH.

I've had a box up asking for Username & password  yes  Specs ......  I don't seem to written it down anywhere ... I tried what I think it was but nothing happens .

TBH it sounds like a port has been disabled.....
You mean the port in the back of the PC  NOZ ?      Trouble is theres only one of that type , ...its not the port in the router as I've had the lappy working through it

can you look on the laptop and see if they are visible?

I have to mess about a bit with mine, but I can usually get them up finally by trial and error of knowing what setting to look at

btw, my username [on talktalk] is my phonenumber and some other digits] and password is some random thing they sent me.

slight tangent but....

were with Virginmedia have been for years and years...

been from dial-up ADSL  to cable broadband..

We have a Virgin super hub thingy...

I know many months back Virgin did some updating of the firmwear in their Hubs remotely that reset the Hub in our house back to default settings..

So all PC internet connects stopped...

had to go back into the Hub and re enable our user name and password to get it all running again....

This gave the same sort of symptoms you have with your desktop...

BUT.....

wont explain why your laptop is still running wi-fi....

You haven't got something where you are getting Wi-Fi via an neighbors property with a insecure network are you???

:C

There appears to be a rational explanation to the ghostly vase affair

AND.........................................

what is it?????????????????????????????????????

Try swapping ports and disabling/ re abling the network connection at the PC check for flashing lights at the back to make sure the network card / port is working.

Sometime software updates can mess things up. f'in windows! If not any of these then It must be your poltergeist which probably came to you in the back of a vauxhall combo.

All ours seem to be haunted!

Open a command prompt

Type Ping 192.168.1.1

Tell us the result

(If that's the wrong IP address for a your router perhaps someone else can suggest what it should be)

You could restore desktop back to known last working date.

Or maybe delete the network on the PC reboot and it should find it again and reinstall network settings.

Have you tried disabling Norton's

Nothing Dave ... black screen  ...typed it in .. what is supposed to happen ?     Back later.

Deke, if you want to try a network card I can stick one in post for you,

They are fairly easy to change.

Actually, just looked, they might all be WiFi cards I have,

would still work though.
