now the more observant of you may notice that the copper looks a little thin

thats because its not 0.5mm. it is 0.073mm

Andy,

Trading standards may well have been interested in that!

You may still be able to get them involved it's the only way to start the ball rolling wrt things like this so I have been told.

im back at the job on wednesday. ill get more details and find out exactly where he got it from

also, the sign appears to be class II. so no idea why they went to the extra expense of the earth!

Is there a fuse in the plug, I can't tell from the photo?

I agree with sidewinder on this Andy, it should be reported, the obvious dangers with this type of "plug" can not be ignored.

Hmm, not exactly BS1363 then...

The scary thing is that most punters would have no idea, it's a three-pin moulded plug so must be good.

See these all the time lately. We had some expensive peristaltic pumps from a market leader recently having IEC leads delivered with these unfused plugs fitted!

I'd also add that the L & N pins look like they are set less than 9mm from the side of the moulding . This, I believe, is the minimum gap for a child's fingers go between plug and socket without touching them.

Also worrying are the cheapo , non BS , phone and game charger transformers . The insulation can break down between the windings and deliver 240v into your phone or game thingy.

I've seen loads of these out in Malaysia. They use the 13A UK style socket outlets out there, but never on a ring, always radial with a 10A or 16A MCB (remember they dont need heaters!). I know this doesn't excuse this manufacture - it doesn't meet the standard .... but does maybe start to give us an understanding as to why they think this is 'safe'

Makes no difference what they think in their country, IF THEY are exporting them for use in the UK, they have the responsibility to ensure it complies with the safety standards here.

If someone else sold it, and not the manufacturer - they too have a duty.
