I've always known them to be called "witches hats"

As for downlights I draw a circle where the lights want to go and then using an old very small flat screwdriver with a chunk of the insulation removed I scewer the ceiling if I hit timber there is just a pin***** to fill

Edit: I guess it wants pinhole instead lol

i always throw the crappy screws they come with away and use 0ne inch eights. you dont want anything that busts out the back of the fixing cos if you ever have to undo it, then the hole fixing comes out and you have to redrill it in a new position, leaving damage. much better to use a spring toggle.

If its an older house and you found one joist, they are usually 16" -18" centres . But not always !!! Sometimes ,to save lots of damage, drop the centre light, see if you can measure between the joists .
I thought it was 15'' centres?
