Had a job today to fix down lights in both bathrooms in a three storey town house about five years old. After I had done the job the owner asked me about changing the lights in the hall and landings. The lights were the three pin bayonet lights. The owner moaned that the cost of the bulbs was exorbitant and also hard to get and that he wanted some alternative to what was fitted at present.

I presume that these fitments are something to do with building regs and are aimed at taking away people

You are not doing anything wrong in changing them now. They had to be fitted originally to meet the 40% low energy lighting rule for Part L? of the building regs. These lamps should have lasted well though and when you consider the savings in lecky he has made, they are not too expensive.

Never seen a low energy lamp socket with 3 pins? 2 pin or 4 pin, yes, as it ensures the lamp is suitable for the external ballast but 3 pins never!
