we have a 17yr old collie cross who has cataracts and really struggles getting upstairs. so he waits for me to take him up to bed of a night.

Im putting off taking him to the vets as Im really afraid of the outcome as the whole family love him to bits. hes ok in the garden and ground floor walking around but he licks his joints alot.

do you think it maybe that time??

This is always a difficult question to answer and what it really comes down to is 'quality of life'

From the issues you describe he likely can't see (not a cause of suffering). It's important not to suddenly re-arrange the furniture and possibly keep the dog on a long lead? Likely to be able to see better (if anything) in good light.

If he struggles with stairs and licks his joints it is very likely he has some arthritis. Is he on any medication? Has he tried an anti-inflammatory like Rimadyl or Metacam? Sometimes some pain relief can make the world of difference.

My advice to you would be to make an appointment with your vet. He will examine your dog thoroughly and give you a much better picture than I can over the Internet! If he's not on any pain relief this may be a good time to try some and see what happens.

The decision whether it's 'time' to have your pet put to sleep is down to you. Your vet can help you with this. The important thing is that your old dog doesn't suffer - and this is why you need to get your dog properly examined and treated as necessary.

If I can be of further help post further.
