Hey all!

Just been looking through the net and saw a distance learning course - BTEC advanced diploma in electrical installation. Is this recognised within the industry. As some know Im leaving the forces and trying to get them to pay for as many quals as possible. I could get this for free!! Is it worthwhile?

Please advise.

Cheers, Rod. :C

hi rod... i'm an ex REME tech... (control equip)

my first Quals were BTEC ONC and then HNC in electrical and electronic engineering.....

as far as i know, the answer to your question is "no"... the industry doesn't recognise them even though an HNC is a 'level 4 ' qualification in city and guilds eyes...

and 2391 is only level 3.

(personally i think it's a little higher than a 3, cos 2392 is also a 3...go figure???)

i ended up doing 17th and 2391 (cos you can't be registered without the regs qualification, either c&g 2381 or 2382.)

maybe someone knows different.

Do you want to become an electrician or domestic installer ? Ie work just in domestic properties or anywhere in the industry?

Id love to become an electrician but obviously Id like to start work as soon as I leave. whatever quals (that are worthwhile) I can get could help with this. C&G 2330 level 2/3 Ill start once I leave. to be honest I just want to be free of the military and start earning.

I believe 2330 is being discontinued this year and replaced witha course that requires NVQ to work along side the college work .

I got on 2330 last year but im doing mine in the evenings so should i get a job that isnt in the trade it wont affect my learning .

Good luck in what ever path you choose, it will all work out in the end .

whilst your waiting have a few on me .

Cheers mate Im sure it will! there's just so many courses out there! Its difficult to know which which is right!

Is it worth speaking to your local college ? Ive found my instructors to be very good at advicing which way to go, but i know not all in instructors are as helpful.................

When I left, I applied to join the JIB, but they wouldn't accept my apprenticeship, or my Master electrician grade.

I took the 2361/2 exams, but then diddn't bother with the JIB.

Later when I decided I needed an ECS card, I had to take the 16th edition before the JIB would issue me a card.

I would suggest you have a chat with the JIB, to see what they require to issue an ECS card.

you can get an ecs card for free if you're in the nic spin.... dunno what it says on it tho' cos i never bothered with it... qualified supervisor i expect...
