John, as BS7671:2008 is not an act of law, treat them as a guide, but, use BS7671:2008 as a starting point for the installations that you work on, not as a final product if it can be helped.

Hi Zeespark, Yes, i see what you mean, use them as an example of good practice in general, and obviously comply with the "fundamental principles" in chapter 13, but do not allow blindly following tables, to compromise sound engineering judgements based on the particular and maybe unique requirements of the installation in question.
